iPods and Assorted Technology

Working together in a small group brainstorming about how to help a student who is non-verbal was really interesting. There was a lot of thought and discussion that helped us to come up with our two leading statements, "I want" and "I do not want" and then the four possible choices, "... a glass of water", etc.

In this activity it became evident to all of us how important it is to have training on not only the piece of equipment, but also in the designing and planning aspects that is required to help someone to successfully communicate their needs and desires through the use of assistive technology. We also had explored a variety of assessment tools, such as the WATI that are used to help pinpoint exactly was is required to help an individual with a specific task.

And yes, Barbara, the iPod is remarkably "simple" to use and I look forward to working with it in-depth to see whether or not this is something that I would like to buy for my own use. Given how much I enjoyed working with it today I think that the odds are very high that I will be owning one in the near future.

Finally, I've posted a link to an article that I thought was very timely; "Five key trends in assistive technology." If you new to the subject as I am it makes for an interesting read.
